Residential Frequently Asked Questions
How much does solar cost?
Today, solar costs less than traditional electricity in many markets. And since our installations require $0 upfront, you pay less for the power you use starting day one.
What happens at the end of my contract?
There are a number of options with IGS Solar. We will be happy to remove the panels for you at no cost, or you can extend your contract, or even purchase the panels if you wish.
Can I sell my home after I have solar panels?
Absolutely! In fact, we’ve seen that solar powered homes tend to improve a home’s value*. IGS Solar is willing to work with you to either purchase your panels before you sell or to transfer the Solar contract to the new owner as part of their investment.

What is a PPA?
A PPA, or Power Purchase Agreement, is your contract with IGS Solar to purchase the energy coming from the panels. With this contract, you will not incur the cost for the panels, installation, and ongoing maintenance. This way you can receive the lower cost of solar power energy without the responsibility for the system.
What do I need for solar to work for me?
Ideally, your home should have a sunny, obstruction-free roof that is able to support the panels. Some interest in changing the world with clean energy wouldn’t be bad either.
How big of a solar array will I need?
Each home is unique. From the power you use to the space you have to generate it, there are many factors that go into your solar plan. Our solar experts will work with you on the perfect plan for your needs.
What does it look like?
Solar panels are black, to better absorb sunlight, and are installed uniformly across an array. Your panels will look great no matter what, but will blend in the most against a darker roof surface.
How long does installation take?
On average, from when you sign the PPA to flipping the switch is approximately 120 days. Your utility provider and home location are the biggest factors in this turnaround time. Please note: installation steps outside of IGS Solar’ control can impact the timing.
Commercial Frequently Asked Questions
What makes my business a good fit for a solar system?
The ideal business to receive solar should have a sunny and obstruction-free roof, a large open field nearby, or a shade free parking lot free to host a solar project.
What is IGS Solar’s involvement in the design, construction, maintenance, and billing of my solar system?
IGS Solar is with you every step of the way. We believe that solar power is a large part of the future of energy and to prove this, we make the initial investment in your panel system. We ask that you pay IGS Solar for only the electricity generated by the system. IGS is responsible for the initial design, construction, and installation, as well as the maintenance and billing over the lifetime of the system.
What is a PPA?
A PPA, or Power Purchase Agreement, is a long-term contract (15-25 years) between IGS Solar and you, our customer. In keeping with our long history of clear and transparent contracts, you can trust that you are agreeing only to purchase any power your system makes. In exchange for this, IGS agrees to own, finance, develop, and maintain the photo-voltaic system for the life of the PPA. IGS ensures all state and federal registrations and tax rules are accurately completed on behalf of your business.
In short, PPA’s offer businesses a quick and easy path towards the benefits of solar: zero capital invested, no maintenance responsibility, significant energy savings, and a reliable energy source for your business for many years to come.
How is the size of my system determined?
IGS solar team will evaluate the property (rooftop, ground, and canopy potential), the region’s climate, and the average daily electricity demand of your business to determine optimal expectations. With these factors in mind, IGS targets each system to achieve 60-80% of the total electrical consumption of your facility.
Who does the installation?
IGS Solar works with local, experienced solar installers to ensure the highest quality solutions. Our partners have a proven track record of installations in your region and understand the ins and outs of installing in your neighborhood. By using local installers, we ensure that our partnerships also help to stimulate local economies.
What can I expect with the solar installation?
From start to finish, our entire solar installation process takes approximately 120 days, with some variability due to city approvals and interconnecting your system with the local utility provider. The process begins with a site assessment and confirmation of system design, which is then submitted to the city for permitting purposes. Once approved, the panels and racking are installed, inspected, and interconnected. Under the guidance, efforts, and turn-key solutions of IGS Solar, your business can be quickly transformed into its own generator of clean, renewable, money-saving energy.
How much can I expect to save with solar?
As an IGS Solar customer, you can look forward to lower electricity costs with respect to the amount of power generated by the solar system and the price of electricity within your utility footprint. However, since the energy market is unpredictable and utility prices are anticipated to steadily increase, your IGS Solar PPA is designed to save you money over the life of your contract.
How does my billing work?
You will be billed monthly by IGS Solar for the solar power generated by your system.
Is solar power reliable?
Absolutely! Solar photovoltaic technology has been in commercial use since the 1950s and is more advanced and efficient today than ever before.
Is there maintenance required?
There are no moving parts with solar and any maintenance required is something IGS Solar will cover at no additional cost to you.
What happens at the end of my contract?
We offer three options:
- IGS will be happy to remove your panels at no cost
- The PPA can be extended to continue your service for another 5-10 years with IGS Solar
- You can purchase the system at any time after the first six years.
Community Frequently Asked Questions
What is community solar?
Community solar arrays are large, centralized solar projects that allow participants to receive the financial benefits of solar without having to install panels directly on their own property. The power produced is delivered to the local utility, who then allocates energy credits to program participants based on monthly output from the array.
Who is eligible for community solar?
Community solar gives residential and commercial customers within the target area the opportunity to utilize this sustainable energy source. Any resident or business in the correct geographical footprint can take advantage of the solar power generated by the array. This includes renters, those with unsuitable rooftops or poorly-sited properties, and any individuals hesitant or unable to build a system of their own.
What are the benefits of community solar?
- The energy savings that come to community solar customers are the same as with any solar project.
- Customers with unsuitable rooftops or poorly-sited properties can participate as long as they are within the same geographic footprint as the utility hosting the solar array.
- Since the solar array is off-site at a remote location, home and property aesthetics are completely unaffected.
- There is no long-term commitment. You can enjoy the financial benefits of community solar for as long or as little as you want.
- Alongside your neighbors and local businesses, community solar allows you to be engaged in the development of a cleaner and more sustainable energy future.
How much does community solar cost?
There is no upfront investment or community solar membership fee required for participation.
Is there any form of a long-term contract agreement with community solar?
Not at all! IGS Solar customers can enjoy the benefits of community solar for as long or as little as they desire. As a program participant, customers receive a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) which guarantees allocation from the solar array on a month-to-month basis.
There are no cancelation fees and customers may cancel at any time by delivering written notice at least 60 days before the effective date of termination.
How much can a customer expect to save?
Savings vary based on the size of your electric bill and the amount of power generated by the solar array each month. Over the course of the year, we target an accumulated deduction that equates to eliminating a full month’s electric bill altogether.
What happens with billing?
Community solar production is linked to a ratepayer’s utility bill via a process known as virtual net metering. Virtual net metering enables energy produced in a solar array, miles away from the home or business, to be credited to an enrolled customer’s utility bill. Customers will be billed separately by IGS Solar for their share of the electricity generated by the array. The amount of the utility credit will vary slightly with changing weather patterns or any variance in the production of the solar array. However, with IGS Solar, individual percentages of production each month will remain the same. So, if you pay to have 20% of the solar power, no matter how much power is made, you will be credited for 20% of that power.
Will I have to pay additional fees in the future?
No. IGS Solar handles any and all insurance, management, and maintenance needed by the community system.
